CEO Compensation & It’s Relationship To The Skyrocketing Cost Of Health Care…

ceo-pay.ju.topExecutives in the top spots at the country’s five largest publicly traded health plans were paid a collective $110 million for their services in 2011. In a time when our Healthcare System has found itself under the full control of the Health Insurance industry, healthcare providers are no longer in charge of the True Health of this wonderful nation. Controlling all aspects of what the insured must do and the hoops which providers must jump through, the insurance industry with all its accountants, lawyers, executives and stock holders are sucking the life out of our Healthcare system as we knew it 25 years ago.

While America’s families struggled with skyrocketing health insurance costs and the worst economy since the Great Depression, chief executives of the 10 largest for-profit health insurance companies collected total pay of $163.6 million, averaging over $16 million per CEO in 2011. (these are the most recent figures available to date)

“The insurance companies are driven by perverse incentives that reward CEO’s for imposing devastating rate hikes on families and businesses while denying care to people when they need it most,” said HCAN Executive Director Ethan Rome.  “It’s indefensible that CEO’s in America are profiting by gouging customers in such a shameless way.”

Statistics have shown as much as 83% of all healthcare dollars spent on health insurance is directed to administrative costs with the remaining 17% spent on the true caring of health. If you were to know that the cost of health insurance is factored into the escalating cost of healthcare rather than just the cost of caring for health, you’d be as upset about our current system as I am!!!

Below are the figures of the Shameless Gougers of our Healthcare System:

Why Take Vitamin D with K2?

Vitamin D has been in the news for the past several years and has seen many studies reflecting it’s tremendous health benefits. News articles such as “Vitamin D Vital for the Heart”, “Sunscreens can Block Vitamin D”, Vitamin D Deficit in Pregnancy Tied to Caesarean Risk”, and “Lack of Vitamin D Can Double Your Risk of Stroke” are just a few of the headlines by some of the major news networks.

Vitamin D Deficiency

More than1 billion people worldwide do not consume adequate amounts of vitamin D and more than 50% of postmenopausal women taking meds for osteoporosis have suboptimal levels of vitamin D. Without adequate levels of Vitamin D, only 10 -15% of our dietary calcium can be absorbed. This is due to the function of the Vitamin D to facilitate the absorption of Calcium.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin/hormone and is obtained in three ways:

  1.  Sunlight
  2. Supplementation
  3. Dietary Intake

Vitamin D is naturally present in very few foods, added to others, and available more readily as a dietary supplement. It is also produced endogenously, within the body, when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. Vitamin D obtained from sun exposure, food, and supplements is biologically inactive and must undergo two hydroxylations in the body for activation. The first occurs in the liver and converts vitamin D to 25-hydroxyvitamin D3. The second occurs primarily in the kidney and forms the physiologically active 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3.

Role of Vitamin D

  • Promotes the proper synthesis and functioning of important proteins essential for proper calcium utilization
  • Supports the maintenance of bones
  • Supports immune health
  • Helps maintain cardiovascular health
  • Helps maintain normal blood pressure

Why Vitamin K2

Vitamin K is also a fat-soluble vitamin, so it is stored in the body’s fat tissue and liver. It is best known for its role in helping blood clot (coagulate) properly (the “K” comes from its German name, Koagulationsvitamin). Vitamin K also plays an important role in bone health by binding calcium and other minerals to the bone.  Vitamin K is used to reduce the risk of bleeding in liver disease, malabsorption syndromes, or in association with long-term use of antibiotics. Most importantly it is needed for proper use of calcium in bones. Higher vitamin K levels correspond to greater bone density, while low levels of vitamin K have been found in those with osteoporosis. There is increasing evidence that vitamin K improves bone health and reduces risk of bone fractures, particularly in postmenopausal women who are at risk for osteoporosis. In addition, studies of other groups (such as male and female athletes) have also shown bone enhancing benefits from vitamin K supplements. Vitamin K may very well end up being as important for you as vitamin D, as research continues to illuminate the growing list of its benefits for your health. Vitamin K is probably where vitamin D was ten years ago, with respect to its appreciation as a vital nutrient that has far more advantages than originally thought.

Purpose of Vitamin D and K as Supplements

Most people are deficient in Vitamin D or at least insufficient as it relates to their diet and sun exposure. Keep in mind that Vitamin K is responsible for healthy tissues. In bone, it activates osteocalcin, a protein required to bind calcium to the mineral matrix, thus strengthening the skeleton. In circulation, Vitamin K2 participates in carboxylation of Matrix Gla Protein (MGP), the most potent inhibitor of arterial calcification known, lowering the risk of vascular damage. Therefore there is a compounding effect of these two vitamins working together.

What to Look for in a Good Supplement

Vitamin D3: 5,000IU

Vitamin K2: 45mcg

Benefits of Vitamin D with K2

  • Helps maintain bone health
  • Promotes normal bone mineral density
  • Promotes proper synthesis of proteins essential for proper calcium utilization
  • Helps maintain cardiovascular health

  • Promotes elasticity of blood vessels
  • Helps maintain normal blood pressure
  • Promotes healthy cells
  • Supports immune health

Who Would Benefit?

  • Bone health
  • Immune health
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Optimal nutrient absorption
  • Optimizing overall health

25%of Those Over 45 Take This Unnecessary Drug…

The number of Americans that take a statin drug to supposedly lower their cholesterol is astonishing! Statistics show that half of the men ages 65-74 and 40% of the women over the age of 75 are being prescribed these statin drugs. It should also be mentioned that one in every four Americans age 45 and above are taking a statin drug. There are many Alternatives to statins and do not have the damaging side affects…but most doctors don’t tell you about them! The normal range for cholesterol approximately 20 years ago was much higher than that used today which means there are millions more that now fall into the category of being placed on these statin drugs. Cholesterol is the most common organic molecule in the brain. Some researchers theorize that blocking cholesterol production, as statins do, interferes with the brain’s performance and causes muddied thinking, memory loss, personality changes, irritability, and aching muscle pain. In my 25+ years of experience,I have seen many patients in my office who were on a statin drug and upon eliminating it cured the spinal and body muscle aches and pains within a week. By no means am I recommending that anyone stop there medications, but you need to be informed as to the Alternatives there are available.

Resveratrol Shown to Reduce Deadly Brain Plaque of Alzheimer’s by 90%

Resveratrol is natural phenol or type of antioxidant found in red grapes, red wine. Research has shown beneficial effects as anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory agents along with supporting healthy blood sugar and cardiovasculature function. It has received considerable attention for its anti-aging properties involving the activation of the SIRT1 gene. Another aspect of Resveratrol function is to activate the production of friendly nitric oxide in your brain. Nitric Oxide is known to cause vasodilation throughout the circulatory system and in turn increasing blood flow and vital oxygen to all parts of the body, such as the brain. This offers a way to prevent the cascade of free radical damage that leads to plaque formation within the brain which leads to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD).

This friendly nitric oxide is called eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide). When eNOS production is disrupted, problems with blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar are much more common. These problems induce further depression of eNOS causing a vicious catch 22. In essence, free radical production jumps into high gear and can start making the most damaging of all free radicals, peroxynitrite. This is a short-lived oxidant species that is a potent inducer of cell death.

Resveratrol has now been found to activate the enzyme that helps make friendly eNOS, thereby breaking the catch 22. Interestingly, other researchers have just shown that the formation of Alzheiner’s actually depresses eNOS, in turn leading to more plaque. In an animal study, researchers show that Resveratrol significantly inhibits plaque formation in animals genetically altered to develop Alzheimer’s (up to 90% reduction in plaque formation).

This new information suggests that Resveratrol—along with blueberries and grape seed extract known as OPC-3—is another potent nutrient to add to the expanding list of nutrients that help to protect and preserve healthy brain function by increasing oxygen as well as reducing deadly brain plaques.

The type of Resveratrol that has the greatest absorption rate is in an Isotonic Solution. This type of delivery process, of an Isotonic solution, will deliver 95% absorption versus the typical 20-25% of a tablet or capsule. After 25+ years of studying antioxidants, I have found the strongest formulation of Resveratrol which can be found by going to http://www.nutrametrix.com/drbarry  which is what I recommend for my patients. Simply type in Resveratrol  in the search field to read more on this product.
