The Downside with Cholesterol and Statin Drugs The FDA Doesn’t Want You To Know About!

If you’re on any cholesterol-lowering statin medications such as atorvastatin (Lipitor), fluvastatin (Lescol), lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), rosuvastatin (Crestor), and simvastatin (Zocor) we urge you to seriously consider looking into Co-Q10 supplemantation.

These drugs have demonstrated to reduce or even deplete the active levels of COQ10 that our body relies upon for energy production. Statin drugs work by inhibiting an enzyme that is needed by the liver to manufacture cholesterol. Remember, the cholesterol that we see as harmful to our body is that which is produced in our liver and not that which we ingest.  Therefore these statins reduce cholesterol production by inhibiting this enzyme. However, this same enzyme is also involved in the production of COQ10. In other words, these statin drugs inhibit the enzyme that’s involved in the production of both cholesterol and COQ10.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a compound found naturally in the energy-producing center of the cell known as the mitochondria. CoQ10 is involved in making an important molecule known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP serves as the cell’s major energy source and drives a number of biological processes, including muscle contraction and the production of protein.

Therefore, the danger in this COQ10 and statins connection is that recent studies suggest that such COQ10 deficiency can cause cognitive, muscular, and cardiovascular health problems. Fortunately, researchers have found that CoQ10 supplementation can combat these worrisome concerns.

As usual, our favorite Federal Government Agency consumer watchdog, the FDA, does not require manufacturers here in the US. to provide us with this crucial warning information on COQ10 and statins. But on the other hand, statins sold in Canada are required to carry a precautionary warning expressly stating that this class of drugs may seriously deplete COQ10 levels, which can lead to impaired cardiac functioning in people with congestive heart failure. If you’re wondering why your physician doesn’t know this information this could be the reason why. So, if you are taking statins for any type of vascular concerns you may be setting yourself up for further damage to the heart and possibly leading to heart failure! The depletion of the essential nutrient COQ10 by the increasingly popular cholesterol-lowering drugs HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) has grown from a level of concern to one of alarm. It is believed that large amounts of people over fifty are COQ10 deficient. In fact, as much as 75 percent could be deficient.

Millions of North Americans take this class of cholesterol-lowering drugs so The Healthy Life Dr. hopes that you share this COQ10 and statins information with anyone else you know that could benefit from this knowledge

There are a lot of qualified N.D.’s, DC’s and M.D.’s that will back this information up so I urge you to take your health in your own hands and speak to a knowledgeable doctor immediately.

The Latest Research on Dementia Prevention…

Daily supplementation using a natural pigment called Astaxanthin — the same coloring that gives flamingos their pink appearance — can reduce the accumulation of phospholipid hydroperoxides (PLOOH) which causes a damaging effect in the blood stream ultimately attacking the brain.

These PLOOH compounds accumulate in the red blood cells of people who suffer from dementia, and scientists now believe that Astaxanthin could help prevent dementia, including Alzheimer’s.

Astaxanthin exhibits exceptionally potent free-radical scavenging activity better known as an antioxidant, and protects your cells, organs and body tissues from oxidative damage. In this way it impacts many aspects of health, but one of the most exciting finds could be its impact on your brain. In fact it is hundreds of times more effective than vitamin E in squelching singlet oxygen free radicals. When combined with another Super-Antioxidant known as OPC-3 the removal of these free radical results are magnified!

People with Dementia tend to accumulate abnormal levels of PLOOH in their red blood cells. But new research published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that taking 6 mg to 12 mg of Astaxanthin daily for 12 weeks lowered blood levels of PLOOH by 40 and 50 percent, respectively.

Researchers concluded that the improved antioxidant status and decreased PLOOH levels in the red blood cells may contribute to the prevention of dementia.

Astaxanthin is a fat soluble nutrient and readily crosses your blood-brain barrier, and a past study found it may help prevent neurodegeneration associated with oxidative stress as well as make a potent natural brain food.

Natural Anti-Inflammatories…

Controlling joint inflammation generally targets the inhibition of prostaglandin production (via the COX enzyme) and leukotrienes (via the enzyme 5-LO). Many health professionals are not aware that there are safe, natural and effective nutritional and herbal approaches to promote bone and joint health. Some effective anti-inflammatory natural herbs include:

Boswellia serratea – (Frankincense)

  • Indian plant – gummy resin found under the bark which contains active ingredients (boswellic acids).
  • Blocks leukotriene biosynthesis by inhibiting 5-LO.
  • May exhibit potent anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Safety – not associated with gastro-intestinal side effects.

Scutellaria baicalensi – (Chinese Skullcap- Common Chinese herb used for centuries)

  • Anti-Inflammatory properties
  • Cyclo-oxygenase (COX-2) inhibition & 5- LO Inhibition
  • Anti-oxidant

Oleanolic acid

  • Found in numerous botanicals
  • Animal models demonstrate:
    • Cyclo-oxygenase (COX-2) inhibition
    • Important to the maintenance of normal anti-inflammatory mechanisms
    • Supports healthy GI tissues (gastroprotective)
    • Promotes healthy liver function (hepatoprotective)

These natural anti-inflammatories are synergistic with glucosamine and do not carry side effects such as GI bleeding, interference with cartilage repair, acceleration of cartilage destruction or degradation of the bone matrix. Glucosamine is an amino-monosaccharide produced naturally in humans and needed for normal building and repairing cartilage.

Aloe vera juice is made from aloe vera gel. It is one of the aloe vera products that can be taken internally so a person can get the internal benefits of aloe vera. Although there have not been many studies showing how beneficial aloe vera can be when taken internally, many people have experienced the aloe vera juice benefits… but beware – there are also some side effects; sometimes severe ones – especially with some brands adding dangerous chemicals into their products (take it as natural as you can). The greatest benefit is noted in the digestive tract.

The process of digestion is very complex. Digestion is the metabolic process that converts foodstuffs within the body for use. The process begins in the mouth where it is chewed and mixed with saliva to prepare it for swallowing. After swallowing, the food is pushed through the esophagus, which transports it to the stomach, where it is further diluted and mixed with enzymes, breaking down the food to be absorbed in the intestines. Most of the absorption process begins to take place in the small intestine. Macronutrients, minerals, vitamins, trace elements and water are absorbed here before reaching the colon. The nutrients pass through the small intestine’s wall, which contains small, finger-like structures called villi.

The blood, which contains the absorbed nutrients, is carried away from the small intestine and goes to the liver for filtration, toxin removal and nutrient processing. The primary function here is regulation of blood glucose levels through a process of temporary storage of excess glucose that is converted in the liver to glycogen in response to insulin. The colon is the final step in the digestion process. The remaining water is reabsorbed in the colon as well as any substance that cannot pass through the villi such as dietary fiber. Digestion is a complex process, which is controlled by several factors. The gastrointestinal tract is also a prominent part of the immune system. The low pH (ranging from 1 to 4) of the stomach is fatal for many microorganisms that enter it. Similarly, mucus neutralizes many of these microorganisms. Other factors in the GI tract help with immune function as well, including enzymes in the saliva and bile.

Because the typical diet consist of many foods unintended for digestion, maintaining a healthy digestive tract is important to the overall health of the body. Ultimate Aloe contains over 200 nutrients, enzymes, vitamins and minerals, including 13 of the 17 essential minerals needed for good nutrition. Studies have shown that aloe consumed orally promotes normal digestion and supports a healthy immune system.*
